SECURE-CS – LTT-1 Held at SETA Istanbul
As part of the Erasmus+ KA220 project “Civil Society Initiatives Strengthened with Information and Data Security” , of which we are a partner, the first Learning, Teaching and Training (LTT) activity, which was successfully completed at the SETA office in Istanbul between 25–29 March 2025.
This intensive five-day programme brought together project partners and participants from different European countries. Participants from Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Norway, Belgium and Türkiye gained theoretical knowledge of digital security, data protection and safe internet use, while developing practical skills through hands-on activities. Gamification, simulations and group work throughout the training allowed participants to reinforce their learning through realistic scenarios.
Day 1 – Introduction and Digital Security Fundamentals
The programme began with a social engineering simulation. Participants experienced the risks that can arise from sharing too much personal information online. The fundamental concepts of cybersecurity were then introduced: the CIA Triad (Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability), types of cyber threats, password security, and the differences between cybersecurity, information security and data privacy. Real-life examples and group activities made the learning tangible.
Day 2 – Data Privacy and Legal Frameworks
The second day focused on national and international data protection regulations. The Turkish KVKK and European GDPR frameworks were examined. Participants discussed the ethical and legal dimensions of personal data protection. The day’s standout activity was the interactive “Data Detective” simulation. Participants developed critical thinking skills by trying to identify privacy breaches in realistic scenarios.
Day 3 – Safe Internet and Social Media Use
The third day addressed everyday internet habits and the risks of social media use. Participants learned to identify fake accounts, recognise phishing attempts and understand how misinformation spreads online. The most popular activity was “Catch the Phishing!”, a game that enabled participants to apply their learning in an engaging format.

Day 4 – Secure Communication and Digital Tools
The fourth day focused on communication security. Participants received training on email security, password management, encryption basics and trustworthy messaging apps such as Signal and Telegram. The group game “Encrypt My Message!” at the end of the day helped reinforce what they had learned.

Day 5 – Cybersecurity Simulation and Closing
On the final day, participants took part in a large-scale cyber crisis simulation that emphasised crisis management, countering disinformation and teamwork. They had the opportunity to apply their learning as a whole. At the closing session, the week’s outcomes were evaluated, participants shared feedback and received their certificates.

Conclusion
LTT-1 offered a comprehensive training experience combining theory, practice and cooperation. Participants strengthened their digital security awareness and gained practical tools for use at both personal and organisational levels. International connections and partnerships were also strengthened.
New meetings and activities building on the outcomes of this event are planned for the next stages of the project. As an association, we are proud to be part of this process and continue contributing to a safer and more informed civil society.
